Say goodbye to thick coats and layers and take out those tank tops and sun dresses! Spring is finally here and it’s time to get those sun glasses out and say hello to Mr. Sun. It’s also time to take a good look at your chimney. Winter can be a tough time for the chimney and it’s a good habit to check for damages before you forget about it for the rest of the year. We from New Buck Chimney Sweeps would like to tell you some of the basics in your chimney’s spring checklist.

Chimney Relining and Replacing the Flue

The biggest damage can occur in the flue and this is the most important thing to fix first. The flue is responsible for allowing bad smoke to properly go out of your house in an orderly manner. The draft inside allows the air to move freely with minimum pressure. Once the flue starts to have holes or cracks, there is less chimney draft. This means that smoke cannot be carried up through the flue efficiently. Eventually, it needs to be replaced. The same goes for the flue liner and the procedure for this is called chimney relining.

As the ice continues to melt, there will be more and more water everywhere — from the mortar and brickwork to the inside parts of the chimney. This is not a good sign. You see, water is the number one destroyer of chimneys. It can harbour mold, destroy bricks and open doors to bigger problems. At this point, you might not even be aware that your chimney is no longer in a stable condition.

Installing Chimney Caps

If you want to keep animals, leaves, debris and other things out of your chimney, then we can install an effective, fully-functional chimney cap. The chimney cap will act as a barrier for anything that will attempt to enter the inside of your chimney, even water. This helps you spend less on a good primary defense mechanism for your chimney.

Chimney Inspections and Cleaning

Lastly, chimney inspections and sweeping is very important. This will allow our certified chimney sweeps to understand what’s going on with your chimney and the necessary repairs that need to be made. These steps should really be number one on your to-do list during spring cleaning.
